Legends of Industry Gala

Legends of Industry 2018 - Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th June

The biggest railway event in the North East has a great line up for its 12th year with guest locomotives, an intensive timetable and loads to see and do.

Visiting locos:

  • National Coal Board, Lambton railway ‘Austerity’ No. 60.
  • Central Electricity Generating Board, Dunston Power Station No.15.

  • Sir Cecil. A Cochrane.
  • Keighley Corporation Gas Department No. 2.
  • Joicey Collieries No. 3, Twizell.
  • Armstrong Whitworth diesel electric Reyrolles No. 2 on shunt release in Marley Hill yard.
  • National Coal Board, Backworth railway No. 49 (on static display).


Photographic preview evening, Friday, June 15, 6pm to 10pm:

Up to five locomotives in steam posed for photography.

Rare locations for photography including access to Marley Hill signalbox, Andrews House Branch and Gibraltar bridge.

Engine shed access.

Spotlit photography until 10pm.

Crews in period dress and with recreated scenes.

Hot food and drinks from Pontop Canteen.

Saturday 16th June highlights

Early morning breakfast train to East Tanfield, 8.40am from Andrews House.

Newly restored NCB liveried Carriage No. A15 from East Tanfield early morning. This will be the first public run with A15.

Seaham locomotive line up in Marley Hill yard featuring No. 60 in steam plus No. 14 and Gamma static.

  • A display of classic vehicles at Marley Hill courtesy of Sunderland & District Classic Vehicle Society.
  • Portable locomotive, Steam Mule (courtesy of Beamish Museum) in operation in front of Marley Hill engine shed.
  • Have a go at driving a model boat courtesy of Saltwell Park Model Boat Club at East Tanfield station.
  • Model railways and displays in Marley Hill Carriage Shed.
  • Watch Marley the Pit Pony pulling a 2 foot gauge railway mine tub at Marley Hill (Saturday morning and Sunday) and visiting 2 foot gauge locomotive 'the Panther Waggon' - a copy of a contraption built in 1967 by some young volunteers involved with the construction of the 2ft gauge Festiniog Railway's deviation line which was taking place in a remote corner of North Wales.
  • Beamish Cog Railway display and demonstration railway (Sunday only) at Marley Hill.
  • Guided tours of our 5 road storage shed at Marley Hill.
  • Forge demonstrations in Marley Hill engine shed.
