We’re looking forward to welcoming you back to Tanfield Railway, the world’s oldest railway!
Your steam train journey will begin from East Tanfield station (post code – DH9 9UY) and operate non-stop to Andrews House station. Services will not operate to Sunniside station due to essential track maintenance.
Please note – parties will have to be in groups of six or fewer unless you are visiting as a household or support bubble which is larger than six. Compartments can hold up to eight people for family groups larger than six people.
Please arrive at least 15 minutes before your train departure time. This will allow enough time to park your car, have your tickets checked, collect your complimentary guidebook and children’s activity sheet and make your way to your own private compartment on the train.
Please bring a face covering as per government guidelines to wear inside our station buildings. Whilst you are on the train you will not be required to wear your face covering.
We’ve introduced additional health and hygiene measures around the railway, this includes:
- Prebooked tickets for our train services with reduced capacity.
- Enhanced cleaning regimes at our stations and on our trains.
- Hand sanitiser stations available to use.
- Contactless/card payments for all refreshment and retail purchases. Please note, there will be no cash payments onsite.
- Social distancing and one-way systems in place.
- Toilets and handwashing facilities available at East Tanfield and Andrews House stations.
When you arrive at Andrews House you will have 25 minutes to enjoy the station, watch the locomotive run around your train and receive your complimentary tea, coffee or juice. Picnic tables will be available for you to enjoy refreshments on.
Your train journey, including the stop at Andrews House station, will last 60 minutes.
Refreshments and gifts are available to purchase from East Tanfield and Andrews House stations.
We’re proud to have been granted the Visit England ‘We’re Good to Go’ Industry Standard mark, demonstrating that we have followed government and industry COVID-19 guidelines, have risk assessments in place and a process to maintain cleanliness and social distancing.
The Tanfield Railway is a charity, which is operated and maintained by dedicated volunteers. Your support allows us to continue preserving the world’s oldest railway for generations to come!
