Location: The role requires flexibility to work across any location within the Tanfield Railway, predominantly based at Marley Hill Engine Shed, Gateshead (with regional outreach across the North East)
Salary: Competitive
Contract: Full-time (40 hours per week), including weekends, evenings, and bank holidays, 3-year fixed-term (extension subject to funding)

Are you a dynamic leader with a passion for community development and heritage? Tanfield Railway, dating back to 1725, is looking for a People Development and Youth Engagement Manager to lead our ambitious new initiative: “Tanfield Tracks: Pioneering People on the World’s Oldest Railway.”
Funded by the Reece Foundation, this pivotal role is designed to secure the future of our railway by inspiring the next generation of engineers and preservationists.
The Role
This is a hands-on management position where you will be the driving force behind our volunteer and youth programmes. You will:
- Grow our Community: Spearhead a plan to expand our volunteer base from 150 to 300 individuals.
- Inspire Youth: Recruit and mentor youth volunteers (aged 14–18) and engage 300 young people through educational partnerships.
- Promote STEM: Design training programmes in engineering and historical preservation that link directly to real-world career paths.
- Drive Social Mobility: Focus outreach on socio-economically disadvantaged areas of the North East to provide transformative opportunities.
Who We Are Looking For
Experience: 3+ years in volunteer management, youth development, or community engagement.
- Skills: A proven track record of meeting recruitment targets and the ability to design structured training workshops.
- Communication: Exceptional interpersonal skills to motivate both seasoned volunteers and young people.
- Flexibility: Willingness to work weekends and evenings to facilitate engagement sessions.
