GETTING TO TANFIELD

The Tanfield Railway is within easy reach of all major towns and cities in the North East of England.

The railway is situated between Gateshead and Stanley, west of the A1. Marley Hill engine shed, Andrews House station, Sunniside station and Causey Arch station are located just off the A6076 Stanley – Sunniside road.

East Tanfield station is on the road linking the A6076 with Tanfield Village. Approach from Chester-le-Street and the A1(M) is via the A693 Stanley road and from Tyneside and the A1 on the A692 Consett road.

There is free parking at Andrews House station/Marley Hill engine shed and East Tanfield station. No parking is available at Sunniside station. A free countryside car park can be used to access Causey Arch station, this is situated a 5-10 minute walk away.

BY CAR

From A1(M) Northbound – Exit at junction 63 for Chester le Street and Beamish. At the roundabout below the motorway take the second exit A693 west towards Stanley and Beamish. Continue for nearly 4 miles on the A693, across 4 roundabouts. Going uphill, turn first right following the Tanfield Railway brown sign. At the bottom of the bank turn right onto the A6076, following the brown sign. Andrews House station is about 2 miles along the A6076, on the left – following the brown sign. East Tanfield station, please follow the brown sign to East Tanfield station.

From A1 Southbound – Exit at the Lobley Hill intersection and follow the A692 west towards Consett for about 2 miles, passing through Streetgate into Sunniside. Straight ahead at the first traffic lights, past the pedestrian lights, at the next traffic lights turn left onto the A6076 (following the Tanfield Railway brown sign). Our main entrance is about 1 mile along the A6076, on the right – following the brown sign to enter Andrews House station car park. Continue along A6076 for around 2 miles, until the junction for Tanfield village with an East Tanfield station brown sign. Follow this road for around 1 mile until the station entrance on the right.

BY BUS

Monday to Saturday: the X30, X31 and X32 from Newcastle, Gateshead and Stanley stop at the Andrews House entrance to the site.
Sunday: The X30 provides an hourly service to Andrews House.

BY FOOT OR BIKE

Cyclists can reach our Marley Hill shed site via the Tanfield Railway Path from Gateshead or the Bowes Railway Path from Jarrow. There are ascents/descents where the railways were rope hauled. These routes can be be used together as a circuit from anywhere on Tyneside.

Walkers can use the same paths from Sunniside (1 mile), Lobley Hill (4 miles), Kibblesworth (2 miles) or Bowes Railway(6 miles).

BY RAIL

Our nearest main line railway stations are Newcastle Central and Durham. The Tyne and Wear Metro system also serves Gateshead Interchange and Newcastle Central for easy bus connections on most days.
