Join us on Sunday 15th February, as we recreate part of Tanfield’s rich industrial heritage!

What’s Happening?

Step back in time and experience the sights, sounds, and smells of the North East’s coal country as Tanfield Railway proudly presents “Coals to Newcastle”, our annual celebration of the coal trains, a sight that used to be common on the Tanfield Branch. Watch history come to life as our heritage locomotive takes to the line hauling authentic coal wagons, recreating the journeys that once fuelled the industries of Tyneside and beyond!

What’s on?

  • Demonstration Coal Trains – See powerful steam locomotives at work moving demonstration Coal Trains.
  • Travel on the worlds oldest railway in Victorian carriages to experience train travel from a bygone era.
  • Get hands on with children’s activities in Andrews House Waiting Room.
  • Industrial Heritage in Action – see the machines, and methods that made coal the lifeblood of the North East.
  • Pitmen’s Refreshments – Enjoy hearty, homemade treats at Andrews House and East Tanfield cafés.
  • Unlimited Steam Train Rides – Travel the full Tanfield line and experience the railway.
  • Take a tour of Marley Hill Engine Shed, leaving from Andrews House Station 11am, 1pm and 3pm.

Tanfield Railway is a charitable trust dedicated to preserving North East England’s industrial railway heritage for future generations. All proceeds from your train rides and on-site purchases contribute to the ongoing preservation and development of Tanfield, the world’s oldest railway.
