Enjoy the Thrill of Driving a Historic Diesel at Tanfield Railway!
Our new Diesel Driver Experiences offer you the unique opportunity to take control of one of our historic diesel locomotives, either TIC No.35, Reyrolles No.2 or Ribblesdale No.6. This is a fantastic experience for any train enthusiast or anyone looking for an unforgettable adventure.
Each session lasts 30 minutes, giving you ample time to learn the basics of operating these magnificent machines under the guidance of our experienced crew. Whether you’re a seasoned railway enthusiast or a curious newcomer, our Diesel Driver Experience is designed to be both educational and exhilarating.
Included with your experience:
– Complimentary Day Travel: Experience Pass holders and one guest can enjoy unlimited train travel for the entire day.
– Tanfield Goody Bag: Take home a piece of the railway with a special Tanfield goody bag.
– Become part of the footplate crew: Don traditional attire for the occasion, with flat cap and boiler suit. PPE provided (gloves, boiler suit). Please wear sturdy shoes.

- Arrive at 10:30am, for experience start time at 10:50am.
- Arrive at 11:55am, for experience start time at 12:15pm.
- Arrive at 1:20pm, for experience start time at 1:40pm.
- Arrive at 3pm, for experience start time at 3:20pm.

Car parking is available at Andrews House station (NE16 5ET), free of charge. Your experience will start from Marley Hill welcome building – just across the bridge from the car park. Here you will be met by one of our Tanfield greeters.
Additional Information:
Please note that experience holders must be aged 21 or over and complete a health and safety declaration prior to participation. Only one the experience participant may travel on the diesel locomotive. This activity may not be suitable for those with some disabilities, particularly where these affect mobility, concentration, dexterity and co-ordination. If you believe this may be a factor for the participant please contact us in advance to ensure the activity is suitable and to avoid any embarrassment on the day.
