Board a lovingly restored steam locomotive and Victorian-era carriages for a scenic 6-mile round-trip through the spectacular wooded Causey Valley. Adult tickets from £15.30 (online price) and children from £5. Day Rover Tickets allow unlimited travel all day, and give you the opportunity to break your journey as often as you like at any of the railway’s stations. You may join the train at any of our stations.

On the following dates March 8, May 2, August 8/9, and September 27 Marley Hill Car Park (NE16 5ET) will be closed, visitors are advised to park their vehicle at East Tanfield Station (DH9 9UY), visitors joining us for our Fox and Edwards events on these days should follow joining instructions sent prior to your visit. No wheelchair accessible compartment will be available on the above listed dates, we apologise for any disappointment.
Meeting Point
- Enter at either East Tanfield or Andrew’s House Station.

The Tanfield Railway is a 3 mile long railway running between Sunniside in Gateshead to East Tanfield in County Durham.

You can join the train at any of our stations. We would recommend starting you day at either East Tanfield Station or Andrews House Station where free parking is available (at both stations).

We are pleased to announce that Tanfield is part of the North East Combined Authority’s better days out by bus – all visitors that are in possession of a valid bus ticket for the day of their visit are entitled to 25% off. Simply show your ticket when you buy your train ticket.

Andrews House Station Cafe (Open 10am-4.30pm): light refreshments.
East Tanfield Station (Open 10am-4.30pm): Hot food including Breakfast, cakes and sandwiches.

A full round trip is approx. 60mins, but your ticket is valid for the full day.

Sadly, due to the heritage nature of our rolling stock, we do not have onboard toilets. However male, female and accessible toilets including a baby change are located at both East Tanfield station and Andrews House.
