03078 – A genuine Tanfield branch survivor

Although it’s best known for being the backbone of Newcastle Central Station shunting duties, 03 078 has a solid Tanfield branch pedigree too. For 20-years the little diesel locomotive was based at Gateshead engine shed and was also a regular at Dunston Staithes and on the remaining parts of the Tanfield branch.

Despite the fact it arrived on Tyneside too late to work upon the surviving stretch of the Tanfield line, we thought it was important to mark the latter years of the railway with this visit.

The staithes at Dunston closed in 1980 marking the end of coal traffic on the last parts of the Tanfield system. Dunston Staithes of course survive to this day thanks to their starring role in the 1990 Gateshead Garden Festival. While 03078 was retired in 1988. It might seem like recent history compared to Causey Arch or Marley Hill engine shed, but it’s all part of nearly 300 years of Tanfield history.
