Embark on a unique journey through time with Tanfield Railway’s all-new Footplate Pass Experience for 2024. Step aboard a steam engine and see the world’s oldest railway from the perspective of a driver and fireman.
Your Footplate Pass Experience supports the continued preservation of Tanfield, the world’s oldest railway.
Important to Know
- Please note that Footplate pass holders must be aged 18 or over and complete a health and safety declaration prior to participation.
- Only one Pass holder can travel on the Footplate at a time.
- This activity may not be suitable for those with some disabilities, particularly where these affect mobility, concentration, dexterity and co-ordination. If you believe this may be a factor for the participant please contact us in advance to ensure the activity is suitable and to avoid any embarrassment on the day.
Includes
- Full Round Trip: Enjoy one full round trip on the footplate of our iconic steam engines, No.49 or Horden (subject to availability).
- Complimentary Day Travel: Experience Pass holders and one guest can enjoy unlimited train travel for the entire day.
- Tanfield Goody Bag: Take home a piece of the railway with a special Tanfield goody bag.
- Selected Dates: Footplate Passes are available for visitors on the last Sunday of each month from March to September. Mark your calendars for March 24th, April 28th, May 26th, June 30th, August 25th, and September 29th at 10.45am, 12pm and 1.50pm. Also Fathers day 16th June: 10.50am, 12.00pm, 1.30pm, & 2.45pm
- Become part of the footplate crew: Don traditional attire for the occasion, with flat cap and boiler suit. PPE provided (gloves, boiler suit). Please wear sturdy shoes.
Meeting Point
- Car parking is available at Andrews House station (NE16 5ET), free of charge. Your experience will start from Marley Hill welcome building – just across the bridge from the car park. Here you will be met by one of our Tanfield greeters.
