Step aboard the Tanfield Railway’s famous North Pole Express for a steam train journey to the North Pole!
Tanfield Railway’s famous North Pole Express is one of the most popular and magical festive experiences in the North East, perfect for families and children. Your adventure begins at East Tanfield Station, where the excitement builds before you even board the train. Upon arrival, you’ll meet the North Pole Express Ticket Conductor, who will clip your special North Pole passport, officially marking the start of your journey.
Before you board your steam hauled North Pole Express train, Santa’s cheerful elves will entertain you with song and dance before being transported to the North Pole through stunning winter landscapes.
Once you arrive, step into Father Christmas’s magical grotto at the North Pole, where you’ll have the chance to visit him in person, with each child receiving a special gift. Enjoy festive refreshments, take part in Christmas activities, and meet the cheeky elves before heading for home on your North Pole Express steam train.

The North Pole Express Experience is around 2/2.25hrs long.

Some visitors do choose to wear pyjamas, however it can get cold at the North Pole and the event is a mainly outdoor one, so please do dress appropriately including sturdy footwear.

We use magic coal to take the train to the North Pole, visitors will be on the train around 10/15 minutes each way where you will alight to see Santa and take part in the festive fun!

The North Pole Express starts and finishes at East Tanfield Station (DH9 9UY).

Sadly, due to the heritage nature of our rolling stock, we do not have onboard toilets. However male, female and accessible toilets including a baby change are located at both East Tanfield station and the North Pole.

Yes, by booking the adult or child in a wheelchair ticket this will allow you to use this faciality. Please note there is space for 1 wheelchair visitor and a maximum of 4 persons travelling alongside. The Train Guard will be happy to assist on the day.

Yes, but space is limited, please car share where possible. Disabled parking is also available, please make a volunteer car park marshal aware on arrival.
